Gardeners Cudham Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Cudham is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for our employees, clients, contractors, visitors, and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. This Health and Safety policy sets out the principles and procedures we follow to manage risks effectively and comply with applicable health and safety legislation and best practice within the gardening industry.
Our Commitment to Health and Safety
We recognise that gardening and landscape work can involve physical hazards, machinery, tools, and exposure to changing weather and ground conditions. Our priority is to minimise risks as far as reasonably practicable through careful planning, training, supervision, and the use of appropriate equipment and protective measures.
Management at Gardeners Cudham takes overall responsibility for ensuring that health and safety is integrated into every aspect of our services, including garden maintenance, landscaping, planting, tree and hedge work, and any other related activities carried out at client properties and shared outdoor spaces.
Responsibilities
Health and safety is a shared responsibility across the company.
Management is responsible for providing clear procedures, suitable equipment, and adequate resources so that work can be carried out safely. This includes carrying out or commissioning risk assessments, ensuring staff receive relevant information, instruction, and training, and reviewing our safety arrangements regularly.
Employees are responsible for taking reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Staff must follow all safety procedures, use equipment correctly, wear required personal protective equipment, and report hazards, near misses, and incidents promptly so that appropriate action can be taken.
Clients and visitors are expected to cooperate with our safety measures, keep access routes clear where possible, inform us of any known site-specific hazards, and refrain from entering areas where gardening operations or machinery use could put them at risk.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
We conduct risk assessments for our gardening and landscaping tasks, considering hazards such as uneven ground, working at height, manual handling, sharp tools, powered machinery, chemicals, and adverse weather. Controls and safe systems of work are put in place based on the findings of these assessments.
Before starting work at a new site, our team will familiarise themselves with the layout, access points, and any specific risks, such as ponds, steps, steep banks, overhead cables, or underground services. Where conditions change or new tasks are introduced, risk assessments are reviewed and, if necessary, updated.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment
All tools and machinery used by Gardeners Cudham are selected, maintained, and operated in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety guidance. Equipment is inspected regularly for damage or wear, and defective items are taken out of use until repaired or replaced.
Only trained and competent staff are permitted to operate powered gardening equipment, such as mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, and other mechanical tools. Guards, safety switches, and other protective features must never be removed or bypassed. Work areas are checked for people, pets, and obstacles before machinery is started.
Personal Protective Equipment
Appropriate personal protective equipment is issued and used where required to reduce exposure to residual risks. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and ear protection, high-visibility clothing, helmets for certain tasks, and respiratory protection where needed.
Employees are responsible for wearing the protective equipment provided, keeping it in good condition, and reporting any damage or loss. Replacement items will be supplied where necessary to ensure protection is maintained.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Gardening work can involve lifting, carrying, digging, and repetitive movements. To reduce the risk of injury, we promote safe manual handling techniques, use mechanical aids where available, and encourage staff to work within their capabilities.
Heavier items such as bags of soil, compost, stone, and large pots should be moved with assistance or using suitable equipment. Work is planned to avoid unnecessary overreaching, twisting, or working in awkward positions for prolonged periods.
Chemicals, Substances and Environmental Considerations
Where we use garden chemicals or other substances, they are selected and applied with care to protect people, pets, wildlife, and the wider environment. Safety data is consulted and appropriate control measures, such as protective clothing and restricted access, are put in place.
We aim to minimise the use of potentially harmful products wherever practical and to follow all instructions relating to storage, handling, application, and disposal. Containers are clearly labelled and kept secure when not in use.
Public and Client Safety on Site
During gardening operations, we take reasonable steps to protect clients, visitors, neighbours, and passers-by from harm. This may include the use of warning signs, barriers, or temporary exclusion zones around areas where work is being carried out or where machinery is operating.
Paths, driveways, and access routes are kept as clear as possible, and tools and materials are stored safely to prevent trips or other accidents. At the end of the working day, sites are left in a tidy and secure condition.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, and near misses are recorded and reviewed so that we can learn from them and improve our controls. Appropriate first aid provisions are maintained, and our team know how to respond if someone is injured or taken ill while we are working.
In the event of a serious incident, we will cooperate fully with any investigations carried out by relevant authorities and take prompt corrective action to prevent recurrence wherever reasonably possible.
Training, Communication and Policy Review
Gardeners Cudham provides ongoing training and supervision to ensure that our employees understand the health and safety risks associated with their work and the procedures they must follow. New starters receive an introduction to our safety standards, and refresher training is provided when needed.
This Health and Safety policy is communicated to all staff and is available to clients upon request. It is reviewed periodically, and whenever there are significant changes to our activities or relevant legislation, to ensure it remains accurate, effective, and appropriate for the gardening services we provide.
